As part of an assignment that involves us creating a online personality, we worked this past week on drawing together parts of this personality.  My personality for this project is based around heroes and self.  How can one become their own hero by looking at others?  How can one hero inspire new generations of heroes for the future?  How can design and graphic designers be a part of this? Below are piece requested for research of this personality.  The image above is a mood board of style and feel for the personality.

Name:          Sam B ____________
                           (Fill in words)
                     Sam B Awesome
                     Sam B Asking for Change
                     Sam B Designing

Media Used: VIMEO

Mission Statement: Inspiring Americans, celebrating women, confronting rape culture, through design.

Look and Feel:  The mood for this project/online personality is the feeling of a woman who is herself and speaks with confidence.  While Janis Joplin didn't care for how she looked she still conveyed a confident personality through her voice.

For this project it is my hope to continue to look at how designers can impact views of women through how they present themselves in others through images and speech.  I am not sure what it this personality will speak toward at the moment but it hopefully it will speak towards women's rights and how they are viewed in some way.

Expect it by Samantha Barbour | Make Your Own Book
The book that goes along with the project/campaign that I worked on last semester is now available for purchase. I think you want to buy this book.  It is pretty fantastic if I do say so myself.  Flip through the pages and see for yourself.  Then head over to blurb and purchase yourself a copy.

BEE MUSICAL

Process Book - Bee Musical from Samantha Barbour on Vimeo.

Part one of this assignment was looking at past projects that we had worked on that we saw as needing help with giving information. For my assignment I looked at a actual information graphic poster I designed my first semester of graduate school at Iowa State University.

Part two of this assignment was redesigning the poster I created during my first semester. Knowing that the other project had specific requirements of it for the class, it was decided that this poster could become more simplified and become more informative and less about getting people to gather for a cause. This part of the assignment took many different forms throughout its development.

Part three of this assignment was the most engaging part for me. I felt much more invested in designing something that looked less like a graphic designer was involved. Part three changed a few times and went from interactive information, to ideas about environmental graphics, to theoretical design, that hints at a relationship between people and bees. Bees communication like humans, but through vibration and dance. In the same way humans are able to communication through vibrations of vocal chords and stringed instruments. Instruments and song cause us to dance. Although the purpose of bees vibration and dance have an entirely different meaning because they use vibration and dance to signal food, danger and the presence of a new queen. In the end I created a cigar box guitar that carried the information from part 2 but also was able to reflect different hum patterns based on the strings used and the construction of the sound holes.
